Today, the last of the three workshops, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, dedicated to reducing the risk of disasters, based on reviews of UNECE’s environmental performance, and hosted by our country, took place.
The aim of the workshop is to provide a platform for the countries of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus to share their experiences in addressing issues of natural and technological/anthropogenic disaster risk management and to support cooperation between the relevant experts for the development of disaster risk reduction standards.
– Only with strategic planning, collective effort and improvement of resilience can we minimize the impact of potential disasters such as earthquakes, floods, forest fires, landslides and industrial accidents – emphasized the Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Kaja Shukova, who opened the event.
She emphasized that these unwanted phenomena negatively affect the state economy, infrastructure and overall social life and added that for successful prevention and management of disasters, it is necessary to constantly practice, test and regularly update cooperation methods at the regional level and beyond.
The series of workshops was realized with the help of the German Environment Agency through UNECE Geneva, and their aim is to produce recommendations for the next cycle of production of environmental performance audit reports in the countries of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus.
